According to the WHO, there are 1.3 billion people with disabilities around the world. It is estimated that every 8th person on the planet suffers from an illness that affects their lives in some way.This information must be taken into account when developing an application or her website.  There are different types of disabilities. The most commons  are: 

Visually Impaired Persons

This category includes persons who are blind, have low vision, color blindness, astigmatism, or other visual impairments. According to the World Health Organization, 285 million people around the world are visually impaired, 39 million are blind and 246 have some minor disorders․

Hearing-impaired persons 

Deaf and hearing-impaired persons fall into this category. According to the WHO fact sheet on Deafness and Hearing Loss, 360 million people worldwide suffer from debilitating hearing loss.

Accessibility in Design

People with reduced mobility (PRM) 

This category includes people whose mobility is limited due to physical or mental disability, age, or other reasons and who require special consideration and adaptation to their needs. This type of disorder affects 1 in 7 adults.

 

People with Cognitive Impairments 

This category includes the widest range of disabilities, including mental illnesses, learning, understanding, and concentration difficulties (such as ADHD), and autism spectrum disorders. Cognitive impairment affects one in nine adults.

 

How Technology Helps People with Disabilities  

The introduction of modern technology has made life much easier for people with disabilities. Among all  the breakthrough inventions today, you’ll find:

  • An advanced communication aid to help people who are unable to communicate verbally.
  • Robotic limbs that fully restore  mobility to amputated arms and legs.
  • Seizure monitoring device to prevent injury.
  • Smart wheelchairs that can overcome obstacles such as stairs.
  • Some of these inventions are incredibly expensive, and it is clear that not everyone can afford such devices.
  • However, there are free things in the  world of technology that can help people with disabilities. For example, the Internet.
  • Adapting an app or his website for  people with disabilities is a top priority for most developers.

Digital Accessibility Regulation 

 

Digital accessibility is comprehensively regulated around the world. Even small businesses need to make their products accessible and useful to everyone. Below is a list of laws in various countries that affect people with disabilities:

  • Australia’s Disability Discrimination Act  1992 
  • European Union’s European Accessibility Act (EAA) 
  • Ireland’s Equality Act 2000-2004 
  • Israel’s Disability Equal Rights  Act 
  • South Korea’s Disability Welfare Act  
  • UK’s Equality Act  2010 Ontario, 
  • Canada Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities Act (AODA) 
  • Title III of the  Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 


Companies whose interfaces do not meet international standards will pay significant fines, and these fines will be compounded with each claim. For example, in the United States in 2022, the average fine for a first-time lawsuit was $43,000.
